I arrived at the restaurant before Kolya, took a seat at the bar, and by the time he got there I was sipping champagne. I watched him walk towards me, his gait graceful and measured, his shoulders broad beneath his jacket and smiled. He leaned in to kiss me.

“How was your meeting?”

“Short. Thankfully.” I decided to avoid going into details about the venue. “Sokolov asked me to name my price for tracking down the painting and I said that I was too busy. That’s it.”

“So, I have you all to myself now?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Pretty much. I’d like to go to the auction at Carlyle’s tomorrow, but I’m not bidding. I want to get a feel for the market, see what sells and who’s buying. But yes, essentially, I’m all yours until you go back to New York.”

“Good. I don’t want to share you.” Kolya smiled and kissed me again, and I bit back the flicker of disquiet his words triggered, reminding myself that he was not Chris, that he would never hit me if he felt that he was not my priority. Then he reached out, brushing something from my thigh.

“What’s that?” I asked. He looked puzzled, squinting at his hand.

“It looks like glitter.”
